Welcome to Aschersleben

Aschersleben, with it's historical charm, is located at the fringes of the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt. It's 1250 year history is very apparent in the old areas of the city. The medieval town wall with its 15 watchtowers, which is approximately two kilometres long, is still intact and is especially worthwile to be seen.

Our historical centre is impressive with different architectural styles of great historical value. The town hall was built in the 16th century. Its enormous size and many gables and towers attract visitors’ attention. The town hall clock’s billy goats are one of the town’s attractions.

Churches in Aschersleben are worth visiting: the Holy Cross Church (Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche), former Franciscian monastery from the 13th century as well as St. Stephani Church (Kirche St. Stephani), a Gothic monumental building from the 15th century with valuable altar pieces of the Cranach School.

Near the marketplace you will find the "Grauer Hof", the oldest secular building in Aschersleben, founded in 1309.

Aschersleben is rich in cultural activities. The great annual festivities are well known in the whole region and attract lots of visitors. Thousands are thrilled by the political cabaret in November and the Autumn Blues Festival in the "Grauer Hof" is becoming more and more popular. Enthusiasts of classical music can enjoy concerts given by the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra “Ascania”.

Aschersleben offers plenty of entertainment. Our modern sports and leisure centre ”Ballhaus” has beach volleyball facilities, a rock climbing wall and a swimming pool. A large sauna bath invites you to come and relax.

Aschersleben Zoo attracts young and old alike throughout the year. Meet approximately 500 animals of 120 species on your visit to Aschersleben Zoo. The highlight is the 2,000m2 outdoor enclosure for our Siberian tigers.

The former remand prison today houses a collection of criminal curiosities  tpday showing an exhibition on crime, criminals and the work of the criminal investigation department. The comprehensive collection illustrates the conditions in prisons from the Middle Ages until now.

The planetarium located in the Zoo invites you to travel the universe. It offers traditional astronomic events, sky watches and musical events.

In summer the 1000m2 outdoor swimming pool is the best place to chill and relax. You can hire a rowing boat or a pedal boat and boat on the adjacent pond called the Gondelteich.
